Student Orientation/Induction

A student orientation/induction is conducted on the first day of commencement of your course. Its purpose is to fully inform new students of most aspects of life at TAIE. In addition, staff will be introduced; a tour of the facilities and the surrounding area will take place, and the opportunity to ask questions. Important contact details for TAIE and emergency services will be given to students at orientation/induction. We care about our students and seek to ensure your stay with us is not only academically rewarding, but also that an enjoyable one.

Student Support Services

For information, resources and useful contacts on a whole range of issues you might encounter while you are studying at TAIE.

Counselling

We provide students with free and confidential counselling services to discuss any life issues or stressful situations which may be affecting their ability to concentrate on their studies. The purpose of the service is to give students an opportunity to explore their concerns in a private and non-judgemental environment, to help them have a clearer understanding of any problems and to suggest strategies or options to address their concerns. Should a student require professional counselling, they will be referred to a qualified Counsellor. There is no charge for this referral service (although the service itself will incur a fee).

Students who are having difficulties with their course academically are encouraged to speak to their trainer first. If the difficulties continue, they can arrange a academic counselling session with the Director of Studies.

Accommodation

New students must advise TAIE whether accommodation is required when completing the Enrolment form. The types of accommodation could be home-stay, hostels, dormitories or serviced apartments.

TAIE can also refer students to relevant and suitable accommodation providers.

Overseas Student Health Cover

International students are required by the Government to join a private health insurance scheme. The OSHC premium cover must be paid before a student visa is issued. Overseas student health cover (OSHC) is insurance that provides cover on the costs for medical and hospital care which international students may need while in Australia. OSHC will also pay for most prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport.

If you are an international student studying in Australia, you must purchase an approved OSHC policy from a registered health benefits organisation, commonly referred to as health funds, before applying for your visa. TAIE will arrange OSHC before you come to Australia to cover you from when you arrive, which you will be invoiced for upon enrolment. It is a requirement that OSHC is purchased and maintained for the entire duration of your visa period.
